Laboratory Manager Ref. 1542740 £34,490 - £40,000 Starcross, Devon EX6 8PE The Animal and Plant Health Agency has a national responsibility for animal, plant and bee health. We investigate, identify and control disease, facilitate international trade, perform scientific research, protect the food chain and play a key role in wildlife and animal welfare. As a Laboratory Manager, you’ll have a key role to play in our mission. You will lead and manage a team of technical, administration and support staff in our Surveillance and Laboratory Services Department. Your team will deliver veterinary surveillance and diagnostic testing including bacteriology, parasitology and serology in support of national projects and international trade programs. You will be responsible for the running of the laboratory and its services; you’ll proactively enhance effectiveness and efficiency for the benefit of the public and our customers. Your broad remit will range from ensuring test delivery and development, reviewing performance and monitoring laboratory and financial activities, through to producing and maintaining instructions, risk assessments/ safety documents. You will have safety responsibility for the entire laboratory including the post mortem and containment level three facilities. You will work closely with colleagues and teams both locally and nationally to progress key agency targets and meet the expectations of project managers and our customers. You will develop and maintain essential competence in your team, creating resilience and flexibility to deploy in emergency response situations. You will have regular contact with teams across the agency and were applicable the Defra group and other government departments. You should have proven experience of laboratory management, including testing and quality assurance. This would preferably be backed with a relevant degree level qualification. Experience of preparing business cases and managing change would be an advantage. A willingness to work occasional weekends, Bank Holidays or evenings is essential, as is the ability to travel occasionally, both within the UK and overseas.
